Swoonalong

It’s been a pretty crazy few months here in the Packard-Raine abode what with our car dying, my phone getting eaten by the dogs, our house in Portland flooding, and my husband needing a crown. None of these things are particularly bad (well, the car is pretty bad though still okay) but together they’ve sapped a lot of my motivation for extracurricular activities. It’s really difficult to not just spend my time worrying about how much the home repair stuff is going to cost, or watch the money I’ve saved for a new car disappear. Suffice to say, sewing has been the one thing I’ve let slip in my schedule (though maybe not the only thing…).

Finally things have settled down enough that I feel I can spend hours devoted to one project (or start many projects all at once). And one of these projects is to join I’m a Ginger Monkey’s Swoonalong and make Camille Roskelly’s Swoon quilt (it’s even a download!). I absolutely love making these blocks, and there’s something satisfying about a block this big. Every time you finish one you feel like you’ve accomplished a real task. My swoon quilt is made with Cloud 9′s Miscellany and Kona Black, and I can’t wait to finish it and put it on my bed. You should join me in the swoonalong and check out everybody’s blocks on flickr!

In shop news, Lizzy House’s 1001 Peeps is now on sale for 50% off through 1/31. We need to make room for her new collection coming soon!

Maman Quilt

Due to the general craziness of the holidays, it’s been a little while since I’ve posted any sewing projects on the blog. In the next two weeks I’ll have a ton of new quilts to share with you, the first being Elizabeth Hartman‘s Mod Sampler Quilt done up in Cloud 9′s Maman and Nursery Basics. These two fabric collections are on their silky soft 100% organic premium cotton sheeting perfect for making luxurious nursery or children’s linens. With this particular quilt I love the back more than the front (though I love the front as well) because of the beautiful brown/blue color combination.

This quilt is headed to Basics, Inc. for their quilt drive benefiting families moving into transitional housing in NYC. They need quilts of all sizes (baby through king) to help families stay warm and cozy in their new homes. For more information about donating your own handmade quilt, check out Bumble Beans Inc page at: http://bumblebeansbasics.com/quilt-info

Laminated Cotton & Prince Charming

To celebrate Tula Pink’s Prince Charming being 25% off this week, I thought I’d whip up a couple of totes in her laminated cotton. I also made them because our cheap-o store bought grocery totes are on their last legs and I wanted some pretty ones so I no longer have to be ashamed of my gross ones in the check out line.

Laminated cotton is the modern iteration of traditional oilcloth, with a polyurethane coating on one side instead of the traditional linseed oil treated fabric. It can be ironed face down using a pressing cloth, and really only needs a walking foot to machine sew (no teflon foot or masking tape required!). I used this pattern from the Purl Bee to make these totes, and two different Prince Charming laminates, Frog Prince in Indigo and Dew Drops in Indigo. This pattern was so simple to put together that I’ll probably make a couple more using Anna Maria Horner’s LouLOUthi laminates.

Our entire collection of laminates is on sale for 25% off through 11/27, so be sure to pick some up to make some fabulous (and practical!) gifts like reusable grocery totes, lunch bags, sandwich bags, and even water-proof bike panniers (those bags you hang off a bike rack).

Figure 8 Scarf

To help usher in the holidays, I thought I would start posting some simple (and slightly more complicated…) gift ideas and patterns. This week I’m starting things off with Anna Maria Horner’s lovely Figure 8 Scarf.

The Figure 8 Scarf is a free pattern on Anna Maria’s website, and is so simple it barely needs instructions. You can sew it up in less than an hour (provided you don’t twist the fabric when sewing), and the result is a snuggly, beautiful scarf without the hassle of all those dangling bits. I’ve gone ahead and packaged some kits of fabric up for this scarf using Anna Maria’s LouLOUthi collection and Tula Pink’s Prince Charming (kit includes a piece of voile & a piece of quilting cotton both measuring 18″ x 72″). Though Anna Maria’s tutorial uses Velveteen and voile, I’ve used quilting cotton and voile, and found the resulting scarf to be a perfect season transitional piece. Once we receive some velveteen in store, I’ll be sure to kit that up as well so you can stay cozy during the colder winter months.

Miscellany on Sale!

Cloud 9 Fabrics‘ Miscellany line (designed by Julia Rothman) is now 20% off. This collection has 8 separate prints on 44/45″ wide 100% certified organic quilter’s cotton. Miscellany is one of my favorite collection of fabrics and contains an amazing range of delicate and compelling imagery from Julia’s recent portfolio. Stop by our store to pick up some of these prints for unique gifts for your family, friends, and even yourself!
